Enabling Grace

April 13, 2016

I' ve recently been learning at the feet of John Piper, the author of many books, but particularly Desiring God. I haven't actually hung out with John, but I've been watching a video teaching series by this great teacher and pastor.  He made an important statement in the series: "Grace is the ever arriving, moment by moment enablement to act in reliance upon God."  Grace is more than God's disposition to save us, as great as that is. It is the continual flow to us to be changed and to do the work God has planned for us.  To love others and to serve others, God is sending us the grace to do so.  "But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect.  No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me."  1 Corinthians 15:10  Grace is much more than we commonly make of it.  Too often, grace is only the love of God that forgives my sin and gives me what I could never deserve, a hope and a future with Christ.  Grace is God's work in me that helps me study harder to prepare for teaching others.  Grace is God's work through me to show compassion to the hurting and the afflicted.  Grace is God's strength in me to endure hardship for his greater purpose in my life.  Grace is about bring change in me, the transformation of my character through many challenges and grace is about bringing hope and power through me to others so that they might experience the enabling grace of God.  How incredible is that?
